Online Gambling Licensed by Greece
Greece began legalizing online gambling in 2011 when Law No. 4002/2011 first introduced a licensing system through tenders—although no actual tenders took place then. A temporary regime allowed 24 EEA operators to continue operations. In 2019, the law was updated (No. 4635/2019), allowing official access to licenses for all interested parties, with the first real licenses issued from September 2020 to 2021.
The license allows online casinos to legally serve players from Greece and other EU countries, provided they comply with laws and technical standards. Operators can obtain two categories of licenses: for betting and for other games of chance, including casinos and poker.
To check legality, a player just needs to visit the official Hellenic Gaming Commission register (Επιτροπή Εποπτείας και Ελέγχου Παιγνίων): there is an online section with a list of valid licenses, their validity, and categories. If the casino appears in this list with a valid license, it is legitimate; otherwise, it operates outside the legal framework.
